Neon Lights Festival 2018: Plastic collection unit
An interactive roving art installation for Neon Lights Festival 2018
The Plastic Collection Unit was borne out of the desire to translate the materials of our city into something significant. The intent was to collect used plastic materials, in this case - plastic cups, to be up-cycled into future art projects. The challenge was to design a more interactive and informative method to carry out this collection process.
The initial concept was to create roving plastic-collecting characters that stood out from amongst the crowd. Festival goers would then be able to interact with them, while disposing their plastic cups.

A white uniform paired with a helmet was proposed, together with platform shoes to allow the performers to be more prominent. Electroluminescent (EL) wire was also incorporated into the design to increase the visibility of the performers as the festival was mainly taking place at night.
A white tarpaulin material was eventually chosen for the main fabric of the costume, mainly due to its water-resistant properties. "Plastic Collection Unit" graphics were applied to various parts of the outfit. Each performer also had a shoulder bag made from the same material to store used plastic cups.

EL wire was also used to line the sides of the costumes as well as the helmet's visor. Platform shoes were made from rain boots and compressed blue foam.
